Wickliffe’s Last G.A.R Member Taken By Death

WICKLIFFE, June 14 – On Tuesday morning, the last member of the Grand Army of the Republic in Wickliffe, Charles Van Allen, passed away in a Cleveland Hospital. Death was caused by erysipelas. Mr. VanAllen was born in Brownsville, New York October 17th, 1846. He enlisted in Company B, 20th Regiment New York Cavalry on July 25th 1863 and was honorably discharged July 31st, 1865. He was the last of a family of two girls and six boys. All of these boys served in the Civil War and one was killed at Cedar Creek.

On January 14th, 1893, Mr. Van Allen was united in marriage to Miss Hattie Edwards in Cleveland. Four children were born to them; Fred, who now resides in Ashtabula, Florence Margaret, who died at the age of eighteen months and Edward and Charles, both of Wickliffe. He is also survived by three grandchildren.

The funeral services were held from the family residence, AshMire Court this morning at eleven o’clock. The Reverend A.W. Dockter officiated. The Color Bearers from Matilda E Morris Tent No. 77 of Willoughby were in attendance and Mrs. Christine Fairman sang.

There will be a short burial service at the Cemetery in Plymouth Ohio where burial will be made following the services at the home.

Charles Van Allen, Last of Vets, is Dead

Charles Van Allen, 82 year old Civil War veneran, died Monday evening, June 11. Funeral serveices were held Thursday from the family home at 11 o'clock, with Sons of Union Veterans acting as pall bearers. Reverend Albert Dockter officiated.

Burial was made in Ashtabula Plymouth cemetery with the Daughters of Union Veterans carrying the colors.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Hattie Van Allen, a son Fred, who lives in Ashtabula and two sons who live at home, Charles and Edward.

Mr. Van Allen is the last Civil War veteran in Wickliffe.
